Why do so many athletes do it?
"They feel better, they feel stronger, they feel more stable," says orthopedic surgeon James Garrick, MD, who founded the Saint Francis Memorial Hospital Center for Sports Medicine in San Francisco. Garrick began incorporating Pilates into his rehabilitation programs 24 years ago.
But it's not just for professional athletes. Here are three great reasons why you should incorporate Pilates into your workout routine:
1. Battle back pain
Nearly every guy from the lumberjack to the lawyer will experience back pain in his lifetime. The catalysts range from injury to obesity to stress, but most back pain is related to weak lower back and ab muscles. Increasing core strength and stability, which is the basis of Pilates, makes a difference, says Garrick.
While large scale studies are yet to be done on Pilates based back rehab, chronic lower back pain sufferers who did Pilates in a 2006 study conducted at Queen's University School of Rehabilitation Therapy in Kingston, Ontario, reported a significant decrease in lower back pain and disability compared to participants who received standard protocol back care.
2. Body Conditioning, both pro and amateur athletes get hooked on Pilates because of the flexibility it offers.
While it's difficult to measure performance as it relates to a workout program, says Garrick, "It's been shown with baseball pitchers that increases in core stability will often get rid of shoulder and elbow problems and improve performance."
Golfers, especially, have been gravitating to Pilates with studios in golfing communities offering specialized programs for golf obsessed clients. "[Men] will notice their waist size going down 2 or 3 inches," says Brent Anderson, PhD, PT, OCS, president of Polestar Pilates, a physical therapy center and international Pilates education program based in Coral Gables, Florida. "But they're much more impressed with the fact that they drove the golf ball 20 more yards."
3. Have better sex

"I usually kick their ass the first session, and they realize, 'I'm not in the shape that I thought I was in,'" says Anderson.
