A year ago today, adidas ultra boost white grey introduced a new sneaker, the Ultra Boost, that would change the climate of the company’s sneaker game for the next year. Making a bold claim that they were launching the best running sneaker ever, the Boost technology already had people intrigued. The design, however, was a major upgrade from previous Boost runners in the same family tree, so it didn’t seem like too much of a reach for the brand to make this declaration.

Boost has been around since 2013; it was first created in a laboratory by BASF and started as a technical tool for runners looking for the ultimate ride, while trying to knock out steps for their Fitbits. In 2014, the adidas ultra boost triple black Energy Boost 2 gave the original model to use the technology even more comfort and also upgraded the aesthetics so you could actually wear them outside of the gym. Boost started showing up in more sneakers, including the Derrick Rose signature line, proving that it was useful for more than just running—and that it was the future of the brand.

Since the release of the Energy Boost in 2013 men's adidas ultra boost running shoes grey have been tweaking the technology through iterations like the Pure Boost and Ultra Boost, although the basic makeup remains the same after all these years. The Boost sole uses a material called thermoplastic polyurethane (or TPU) to form its bundle tightly packed sole nuggets. Just like the more traditional midsole material, EVA, TPU compresses under pressure for shock absorption – what’s unique about the adidas tech is the ability to instantly bounce back to its original shape. By moulding together lots of small capsules, they are allowed to ping back into shape quicker and easier than one big slab of sole could. The frisky foam is able to retain these properties despite temperature variation, being almost impervious to the elements, where EVA has been observed to stiffen in the cold.

Resting on the foundation of its innovative cushioning material, adidas ultra boost uncaged parley white along with BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, designed an ambitious midsole system that would carry the Three Stripes brand back to sneaker supremacy. With science on its side, solid granular material known as TPU was blown up and reshaped into miniature energy capsules making up the silhouette’s unique styrofoam-esque midsole. Believed to yield the highest energy return to that of any runner currently on the market, the system underwent countless temperature-sensitive tests with the Innovation Team concluding that BOOST foam is up to three times more temperature-resistant than standard EVA material — delivering a more consistent run.
